For the first time since 2019, the Dauphin Curling Club is getting set to host the Dauphin Men's Bonspiel. It'll take place from Thursday, March 3 to Sunday, March 6.

The entry fee is $200 and that includes a four-game guarantee. There's also pizza on Friday night and a catered meal on Saturday. Chris Todoruk says this event is a long time coming.

"It's pretty exciting that we can finally get together and run a bonspiel," said Todoruk. "We've already had a few teams confirm, we're looking forward to having a great weekend."

One of the highlights is on Friday when a live Calcutta is held upstairs in the curlers lounge and some great prizes are up for grabs.

Teams of any skill level are welcome to sign up for the event. You can register your team by calling Dustin at 572-6735.

After a thrilling end to game one, the Grand Plains U18 Ice Dogs used that momentum to sweep their series with the Souris Elks.

Playing game two in a best-of-three with the Elks, the Ice Dogs played a solid game from start to finish to wrap up the series with a 4-1 win.

Tess Baueriss scored twice for Grand Plains while Ashley Shiner and Tereza Roulette scored singles. Next up for the team is the league semifinals.

The Parkland U18 Rangers had an opportunity to jump into a tie for fifth place on Tuesday night; however, that will have to wait a few more days.

The Southwest Cougars got off to a good start and never looked back as they downed Parkland, 5-2. Rylan Gibbs and Jayce Legaarden scored for Parkland in the game.

Parkland now has three games left, a pair this weekend against Interlake and they wrap up their season on Monday against the Winnipeg Bruins. The team can still climb in the standings but they will need to win at least two more games to achieve that.

Less than a month ago, the Dauphin Kings announced the commitment of Joe Gerebi as the Chanhassen native signed his letter of intent to join the Kings in the 2022-23 season.

Now, the organization is at it again. Nick Hatton who serves as team captain for the Bloomington Jefferson High School Jaguars has announced he will also join the team next season. Hatton, who will graduate in the coming months, is thrilled to join a great organization in Dauphin.

“It feels absolutely amazing to sign my intent,” said Hatton. “I’ve heard some incredible things and I can’t wait to head to Dauphin.”

Andy Kubas is the team’s Northern USA Scout and he’s been watching Hatton since grade 10. Just like Gerebi, Andy says not only is Nick an elite hockey player but he’s a tremendous person.

“Really good hockey player, he has great edges and he sees the ice really well,” said Kubas. “He checks off all the boxes as far as what player we want in Dauphin. He’s a really good kid that so happens to be a solid player as well.”

An article came out prior to the Minnesota High School season and it listed three defencemen to watch, two of which are likely to be drafted in the NHL draft, the third was Hatton.

In 21 games this season with his team, Hatton has scored four times and added six assists.

In talking with Doug Hedley, he said he’s very pleased to add a great young talent.

“Andy has done a tremendous job for us, he’s a real professional,” said Hedley. “We’re really excited about Nick, he had quite a few teams from the North American Hockey League that were interested in him. He’s going to fit really well into our identity when it comes to playing fast and moving the puck up the ice. We’re very happy to have him.”

In the Metro West, Bloomington Jefferson is 6-7 in conference play and 9-14 overall. Chaska leads the way at 12-1 in the conference and they’re 17-5 overall. After his season wraps up with Bloomington, Nick is looking forward to spending plenty of time in the gym and on the ice whenever he can as he prepares for his rookie season in Canada in the MJHL.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure I’m ready for the fall,” ended Hatton. “I want to finish out this season with a bang with my high school team and then all of my focus shifts to getting ready for the MJHL.”

The Parkland U18 Rangers earned a big two points on Saturday and now, they're ready for a huge week to end the regular season.

Starting Tuesday, the team will play four times in six days to end the season.

Tuesday, February 15:

The Southwest Cougars make their way to Credit Union Place. Parkland is 0-3 against the Cougars this season, being outscored 11-4. Both teams will enter the game with 37 points and they have both played 36 games. Just two points behind the Thrashers for fifth place, two critical points will be up for grabs.

Friday, February 18 and 19:

The Rangers hit the road for their final road trip of the season as they head to Teulon to play the Interlake Lightning twice. Parkland scored 15 goals in two games against Interlake earlier this season and won both games convincingly.

Sitting in the basement of the league, the Lightning have long been eliminated from playoff contention. So basically, they'll be looking to play spoiler on home ice this season. It's never easy to win in an opponents arena but that's exactly what Parkland will look to do.

Monday, February 21:

The Winnipeg Bruins decided they didn't want to spend a night in a hotel when they came to Dauphin earlier this season so instead of kids getting the day off on Louis Riel Day, a game will be played.

As of this posting, the Bruins are three points behind Parkland and they also have four games left this season, starting on Wednesday.

In their first two meetings against the Bruins, Parkland scored 14 times and picked up two wins. Last meeting, the Rangers scored another five goals but they gave up seven so they'll enter Monday's game looking to win the season series.

----------

The Yellowhead Chiefs have 40 points and they're in fourth place alone. Finishing in fourth guarantees that team home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

That's what Parkland is gunning for and they, at the best, can finish with 45 points this season. To put things into perspective, Parkland is four points away from recording their winningest season in the last several years. The team earned 37 points (the same amount they have now) in the 2017-18 season and they recorded 40 points in the season prior.

It's been a season full of positives for the U18 Rangers and now they're putting their best foot forward in the push to the playoffs. Do keep in mind, regardless of what happens over the next seven days, the Rangers will be playing playoff hockey.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity girls basketball team is one of the best in the province at the AAA level and they're coming off a tremendous weekend.

The team won two of their three games to earn a silver medal at the Stonewall Rams tournament. They opened up the tournament with a convincing 15 point win against University of Winnipeg, but that was just the start.

Next up was a 26 point win against Westgate which pitted the Clippers up against the top-ranked team in the province, the St. James Jimmies.

The Clippers got the game within six points until the last minute when the Jimmies hit two contested three pointers as they picked up a 46-34 win against the Clippers.

None the less, Dauphin put together another great weekend and they'll look to keep it going later this week when they're in action again.

The U18 Grand Plains Ice Dogs are one win away from moving on in the playoffs after winning a thriller on Sunday.

Up against the Souris Elks in a best-of-three quarterfinal series, Grand Plains jumped out to a fast start scoring the first three goals of the game. But Souris responded by scoring three straight to tie it.

Souris wouldn't score again and Crystal Zamzow sent the Ice Dogs home happy as she scored in double-overtime in a 4-3 victory. Caitlin Fillion was superb in net, turning away some great chances from the Elks before Zamzow finished the game and the Swan River native also had one other goal.

Also scoring for the Ice Dogs was Ashley Shiner and Tess Baueriss. Grand Plains can move to the league semifinals with a win on Tuesday night in Souris.

There's less than a month left in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League regular season and the push to the playoffs is continuing to heat up across the league. In the West Division, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines and Dauphin Kings are battling for the top spot. Dauphin enters this week one point ahead of the Wolverines.

The two clubs have 58 and 59 points, respectively while the Virden Oil Capitals are in third with 44 points, one more than the Swan Valley Stampeders. Just on the outside looking in are the Neepawa Titans who have 40 points and are three points back of the fourth and final playoff spot. They also have two games in hand on the Stampeders and Neepawa took a step in the right direction this past weekend earning three of a possible four points. They ousted Virden, 6-0 on Friday night which was followed by a 5-4 overtime loss on Saturday.

Neepawa was firing on all cylinders on the man advantage, scoring five times on 11 tries. Ken Pearson is the team's head coach and general and he believes that the team can build confidence off of this past weekend.

"We would have liked to get four this weekend to help us catch them but three points is a big weekend for us," said Pearson. "If we can continue to have more weekends like this past one moving forward, I think we'll be right in the thick of things for that final spot."

Although the team came up short on Saturday, it was still a game that Ken will never forget and positive thoughts will come out of it as the team's bench boss coached his 1000th game in the MJHL. This has included him winning a championship with Winkler and the Blues before bringing his talents to Neepawa. And while it would have been a special accomplishment regardless of where is coaching, there was some added excitement to the accomplishment for Ken as he's coaching his hometown team and a team he played for.

"To be around that long in this league, it's a special feeling for my family and me," said Pearson. "The players are the reason that I'm still doing this. I try to have a smile on my face every day at the rink and I want to have some fun with the guys. It's been a great ride and I feel like I still have a lot more to give."

Neepawa plays a pair of home games this weekend against OCN followed by a tilt with Dauphin next Monday. Three of Neepawa's final six games come against Dauphin with the final three coming against Waywayseecappo.

Tina Toews, Carol Sime, Sherry Beyak and Candace DeVos won the Winnipegosis ladies bonspiel over the weekend.

Allison Fisher, Keirstin Crandall, Kelsey Crandall and Amber Fidierchuk; meanwhile, won the second event. Winning the third event was Shayna Benson, Alisha Thompson, Krissy Bayduza and Belle Maniel.

Next up in Winnipegosis is the mixed bonspiel. You can take part by calling Suzette at 657-2267.

It was a great weekend for the Parkland U15 Women's Rangers as they picked up a pair of wins.

On Saturday, Carli Durston and Grace Kirk each scored once in a tight 2-1 win against Norman. Then on Sunday, Katie Falkevitch scored the game-winner in a 2-1 win against Eastman.

Grace Kirk scored the team's other goal in the victory.

The Dauphin Clippers hockey team played a great third period on Sunday afternoon to end the weekend with a win.

Playing the Grand Plains Raiders, Dauphin scored three times in the final frame to earn a 4-1 win over their Parkland rival.

Trayden Guiboche scored twice for the Clippers while Liam Chartrand and Linden Smigelsky also scored for Dauphin in the win, who finished 1-2 over the weekend.
